Max's iPad cake

My first born turned 8 on Wednesday and for the first time in four years, he didn't request a racetrack cake or some sort of New York Mets themed design. Nope, he's a big boy now and aimed much higher - my all-things-electronic-obsessed sweet boy requested an iPad cake, specifically an iPad2 cake, just like the one I have and rarely let him use.

As usual, photos taken by the world's best cake picture taker (and my husband) Doug Schneider.

Side by side with the real thing (realized after the fact that I should have changed my wall paper so it matched a little better, oh well!)

I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out, even though the NY area was in the middle of a crazy heat wave and his party was at a local swimming pool (at least 95 degrees in the shade!)  We kept the cake in the refrigerator as long as possible, but even after 5 minutes it started to look a little shiny and melty. But it was a lot of fun to make and I'd love to make another one soon!  The cake was vanilla bean with a layer of melted chocolate and chocolate and vanilla swirl buttercream (another request from the birthday boy). Cake covered in fondant and all the app buttons were hand made from gumpaste.

Happy birthday, sweet boy! I can't wait to find out what you've got in mind for next year's cake!

Oh! that is awesome! I'm thinking of doing an iPad cake for my soon to be 3 year old (I'm a bad mom that lets her play with the iPad A LOT and she has kind of gotten to where she thinks it's hers). I have never worked with fondant or gum paste, always with frosting. I may have to give it a shot though. I will be coming to this post a lot though I tell ya!

Best of luck, Lyndsey! Feel free to ask questions - I picked the icons that were the least complicated - and I suggest you do the same!

Wow! This looks great! I am hoping to do something similar for my brother for his 18th this April. I have never done anything like this before so any advice would be greatly appreciated! :)

Hi Jenny! Sorry, just Saw your comment. What kind of advice do you need? Biggest thing I can tell you is to keep it as simple as possible. Look to make copy icons that are the simplest in design, and then maybe one or two that the birthday boy likes the best. Hope that helps! Feel free to email me (Sara at sarabakescakes.com) or reply here if you have specific how to questions. I'm happy to help if I can!

Thank you Sara, that's really kind. Firstly I was wondering whether you would recommend making this style of cake for someone like me who hasn't really any experience of decorating on this scale? A second idea I had for my brother's cake was a figure 18 style, do you think this is more achievable? Secondly if you do think it would be manageable for me to do, what would you recommend using to colour the apps?
